Meg Ryan
Blond-haired, blue-eyed with an
effervescent personality, Meg Ryan was born Margaret Mary Emily Hyra in
Fairfield, Connecticut, to Susan (Duggan) Duggan, the English teacher, and a
former actress, and Harry Hyra, a math teacher. Meg Ryan is of Ruthenian, Polish,
Irish and German family heritage ("Hyra" is a Ruthenian surname,
while "Ryan" is the maiden name of her maternal grandmother). Meg was
graduated in June 1979 Bethel high school in Bethel. Meg relocated to New York
City and studied journalism at New York University. Meg Ryan was her new name
and she began acting to earn extra money during her time at university. In the
year 1981, she had her big screen debut with a brief appearance as Candice
Bergen's daughter in George Cukor's final film Rich and Famous (1981). She was
a test subject and was chosen to play Betsy in the daytime soap on television
As the World Turns (1956). From 1982 until 1984, she was a member of the cast.
Meg also had a part in the TV series One of the Boys (1982), but this show was
eventually cancelled. She relocated to Hollywood in 1984 and was offered an
interview for the western-themed television show Wildside (1985). Meg played a
minor role in Top Gun (1986), which resulted in her being cast in Steven
Spielberg's Innerspace (1987) in which she was a co-star with Dennis Quaid. Meg
was also a co-star with Quaid in the remake of D.O.A. (1988) and they got
married on Saint Valentine's Day 1991. Meg was in When Harry Met Sally...
(1989), that made the scene at the restaurant famous. Meg was twice nominated
for the Golden Globe and BAFTA. In 1990, she co-starred with Tom Hanks in Joe
Versus the Volcano (1990) and this time she played three roles as
DeDe/Angelica/Patricia. In 1993, Meg starred with Tom in Sleepless in Seattle
(1993) and was nominated again for the Golden Globe. In 1994, Meg decided to
act contrary to the norm when she acted as the wife of an alcoholic and mother
in When a Man Loves a Woman (1994). Then, she returned to her "cute"
I.Q. (1994) and French Kiss (1996). People Magazine voted Meg as one of the top
50 most beautiful people on earth 1994.
